Cognac Tastings — Cognac Town, Bordeaux Day Trips & More
Go where the angels take their share — barrel cellars black with age, family distillers pouring straight from the cask, and the double distillation that made Cognac the world’s benchmark brandy.
Why Cognac Tasting
Worth Doing in France
Cognac is a town before it’s a drink — a quiet river town where the grand maisons (Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin) age millions of barrels, and family producers two villages over distill the same grapes on wood-fired stills. A tasting tour gets you into the cellars, explains VS to XO in one lineup, and usually ends with a pour straight from the barrel. Compare the options below.

What travelers ask before booking a cognac cellar tour or tasting.
A walk through the barrel cellars — walls blackened by the angels'-share fungus — the double-distillation story, and a guided tasting flight, usually VS through XO so the age tiers finally make sense. Grand maisons add brand theatre; family producers pour straight from the cask.
Minimum age of the youngest spirit in the blend: VS is 2 years, VSOP 4, XO 10 (raised from 6 in 2018). Older tiers exist (XXO, hors d'âge), and the houses' prestige cuvées go far beyond the minimums. One flight across the tiers teaches more than any label ever will.
Yes — the town is about an hour and a half from Bordeaux by road, with direct regional trains too, and guided day trips from Bordeaux bundle transport with maison visits and tastings. In Cognac itself you can walk between the riverside houses.
Hennessy, Martell and Rémy Martin run the polished flagship tours — worth doing once for the cellars alone. The small producers and bouilleurs de cru pour more generously and sell bottles you can't get at home. As in Champagne, the ideal day is one of each.
Maison tours with a tasting typically start around €20–€40, climbing for prestige flights; day trips from Bordeaux with transport and several visits run considerably more. Check the location pages for current prices.
Cognac is distilled twice in pot stills and polished; armagnac is traditionally distilled once, on farms in Gascony, and carries more of the grape with it. Our cognac vs armagnac guide compares the spirits — and the very different trips they make.
The cellar visit works even for non-drinkers (the angels' share alone is worth the tour), and tasting at the source converts more skeptics than any bar. Try pineau des Charentes — the region's fortified aperitif — as the gentle on-ramp.
Year-round — cellars are indoors and the temperature never changes. Autumn adds distillation season atmosphere at the smaller houses (stills traditionally fire up after harvest). Book maison tours a few days ahead in summer.
